Chovexani....is the darker heart of distant dances. This professional dance troupe, located in the heart of New York's Gotham City, is the brainchild of founder and artistic director Z. Asha. With more than a decade's work in theater, art, and ethnic dance, she has pulled together the experimental concept of juxtaposing ancient performing arts with modern concepts. This fusion work is typical of Z; from her beginnings in Florida's ethno-fusion influenced American Tribal style belly dance scene, she quickly took Middle Eastern technique and paired it with non-traditional underground beats, non-traditional costuming, and theatrical nuances.

Chovexani quickly takes up Lady Asha's trademark. The result: Near and Far Eastern works combined with the bold brash concepts of Gothic/tribal (American Tribal Style), gypsy and experimental performance theater.
Their various repertoire boasts Middle Eastern, Persian, East Indian, Chinese, Thai, and fusions of these ethnic arts, music, and dances, and their skills include: candle dance/balancing, sword play/balancing, finger cymbals work, veils and double veils, canes, and fans, to name a few.....

Not to mention the strong feminine influence. Aptly named, much of Chovexani's work embodies the goddess/ritual aspect, and all around femme power is what drives these wise women to excel. Part priestesses, part rock stars, part brujas, part gothic chicks....these talented women are always entertaining.
